Master Class: Fabiano Fund

The Fabiano Fund of the Newton Choral Society has sponsored 18 master class events for young musicians since its inception in 1990.  The master class format is a unique opportunity for public performance and professional critique and is rarely available to young artists.

Teen students are selected by audition and coached by a notable professional.  Practitioners for vocal master classes have been sopranos Dominique LaBelle, Jayne West, Carole Haber, and Ellen Chickering, mezzo-sopranos Pamela Dellal and Deborah Rentz-Moore, baritones Christopheren Nomura, David Kravits, and Thomas Jones; tenors William Hite and Matthew Anderson.  Conductor David Carrier was the practitioner for a conducting master class.  Students have been selected most recently from All Newton Music School, Boston Arts Academy, and Newton North High School.

The Fabiano Fund was established in memory of Susan Fabiano, a member of NCS from its founding until her death in 1989.  The purpose of the Fund is to carry on Susan’s memory and join together two important strands of her life–children and music–by increasing the Newton Choral Society’s outreach to young people.

Artist in Residence

Thomas Jones, Baritone

Thomas Jones, Baritone

During various seasons throughout its history, Newton Choral Society has featured an Artist in Residence program.  The artist, a leading soloist and vocal teacher in the Boston area, has worked with NCS throughout the year on vocal technique.  In addition, the featured artist has performed as a soloist in concerts with NCS during the season and has given a solo recital in May.  Our most recent Artists in Residence have been Thomas Jones, baritone, and Pamela Dellal, mezzo.

Newton Free Library

The Virginia J. Phillips Fund was initiated in memory of Virginia Phillips, who served as President of Newton Choral Society from 1997 to 2000.  The Fund provides two types of materials to the Newton Free Library.  A CD of each performance is made available to the Newton community through the Newton Free Library, and musical scores of each work performed during our concert season are available to vocalists throughout the Minuteman Library System.
